President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has addressed the nation regarding the first positive case of community spread of COVID-19 in Male’ City.

In a very emotional address, the president urged the public to remain calm, be patient and to cooperate fully with the health service professionals while they do their jobs to conduct contact tracing to eliminate further community spread of COVID-19 in Maldives. President Solih stated under the advice of the national Security Council and other attendants, Male’ City will be locked down for the 24 hours.

President Solih also stated the public will not face any shortage of food in this difficult period as an adequate stock of food and medicine have been arranged prior to this. He reassured the public that the government had been well prepared for any COVID-19 situation adding efficient measures have been previously prepared for such a case. He further added the government is implementing all necessary safeguards to minimise community spread and protect the public.

Stating the COVID-19 is a chronic and potentially fatal illness without any known cure President stated the most important precaution we can take to protect ourselves and our families is by staying home and maintaining social distancing. Speaking about the changes and difficulties the situation will have on daily lives President encouraged the public to help one another during these trying times and to treat each other with the respect and kindness taught to us through the Holy tenets of Islam.
