Media Coordinator of MDP Parliamentary Group and Member of Parliament for Velidhoo Constituency, Mohamed Abdulla Shafeeq (Mode) has said that the People’s Majlis is a place where a lot of work related to the people has to be done, and the party does not want to keep as the Speaker of the parliament anyone who interferes with that work .
He said this while speaking at a press conference held by MDP Parliamentary Group.
Mode said there was no legal obstacle to the Speaker presiding over the Majlis before the expiry of the 14-day notice period stipulated in the regulation of the parliament.
He accused Speaker of Majlis, President Mohamed Nasheed of refusing to preside over the parliament session to prevent the proceedings of the no confidence motion submitted against Deputy Speaker, Eva Abdulla.
He also said that the no-confidence motions against the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament will not be withdrawn and that the best way is to resign from their positions.
While 50 MPs signed the no confidence motion submitted on 23 May 2023 to remove Eva from office, the no confidence motion against Nasheed was submitted on 7 June 2023 with the signatures of 54 members.
Amongst these, the no confidence motion against Eva has now been scheduled for today’s sitting of the parliament.
