Former ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has chosen former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as its interim leader.
The decision was made on Thursday at the ninth meeting of the fourth session of the party’s national council, held in Ukulhas island of the Alif Alif atoll.
With the support of 47 of the parliamentarians in attendance, the resolution proposing to designate Solih as the party’s acting leader was approved.
The resolution to designate the former president as their temporary leader was put forth by Anwar Ibrahim, the president of the MDP National Council’s Thimarafushi constituency.
Additionally, it was approved that party members who served in the cabinet of the previous MDP administration be recognized as current National Council members until the conclusion of the council’s fourth term.
Ibrahim Waheed, the administrative deputy chairperson of the MDP and a member of the National Council, supported the resolution.
Following disputes within the party, the estranged former president and leader of the party, Mohamed Nasheed, departed MDP and founded a new political party called The Democrats.
