Minister of Economic and Development, Fayyaz Ismail has been appointed as the temporary in charge of the operations of Ministry of Tourism due to the dismissal of Tourism Minister, Ali Waheed.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih advised Ali Waheed to resign from the post regarding complaints of disciplinary actions made against him by his employees. Despite the advice of the president, the minister still refused to resign from his post and was removed from his post earlier yesterday by President Solih.

Ali Waheed’s dismissal was confirmed by a tweet from the spokesperson for the president, Ibrahim Hoodh. The tweet stated that after removal of Ali Waheed from his post as the Minister of Tourism, the president appointed Fayyaz Ismail as the temporary in charge of Tourism Ministry’s operations.

Ali Waheed, a member of Jumhooree Party (JP) was appointed as the Minister of Tourism under a slot for JP, which is a part of the current government coalition. He was accused of sexually harassing employees of the ministry. Several employees who were the victims of his harassment met with the president yesterday and explained the details of the cases to the president himself.

Official complaints regarding the matter has now been filed to the President’s Office and to Gender Ministry as well. On a previous account, Ali Waheed was also accused of sexually harassing Minister of Transport, Aishath Nahula.
