The UK has ruled that the arrest of former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed in August 2021 while he was undergoing medical treatment in the UK was illegal and that he should be compensated.
A statement released by Ali Waheed’s legal team stated that Ali Waheed was arrested for alleged violation of immigration laws of the country but was released shortly after. The lawfirm had given full assurances on his behalf since his arrest that he has not violated any law or regulation of the UK or the Maldves, said the statement.
Furthermore, the statement added that the authorities in the UK have agreed that Ali Waheed’s arrest and detention was illegal. The statement also said that the UK government has decided to apologize to Ali Waheed and pay him £20,000 in compensation for his illegal arrest.
