The Maldives made an urgent appeal for the restoration of vital health services and the activation of health facilities in Palestine during the 156th session of the World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board in Geneva. This meeting took place at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 3 to 11, and was attended by a Maldivian delegation led by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim.
The delegation highlighted the serious health situation in the occupied Palestinian Territories, emphasizing the need for immediate action. The Maldives supported proposals put forth by Palestine and opposed those from Israel, underlining the urgency of the matter.
The WHO Executive Board consists of 34 technically qualified members elected for three-year terms, responsible for implementing the decisions and policies of the World Health Assembly and advising on its operations.
The meeting included extensive discussions on restoring essential health services and activating health facilities in Gaza. Topics covered included the delivery of medical supplies and fuel to hospitals, amidst significant access restrictions. Another key focus was the urgent need for systematic and sustained access for the population in Gaza. These discussions highlighted the critical necessity for comprehensive efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure and services in the region.
Additionally, the Maldives advocated for improved response mechanisms and the capacity of all nations to manage global health emergencies, as well as for increasing universal health coverage to help achieve sustainable development goals. The Maldives also emphasized the importance of addressing health issues related to climate change and safeguarding the health of children and women.
While in Geneva, the Maldivian delegation met with WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, where discussions focused on seeking further support and assistance from the WHO for the Maldives. The delegation expressed gratitude for the current support and assistance provided by the WHO, and officials praised the organization’s efforts.
