The South Asia Laadli Media and Advertising Awards for Gender Sensitivity (SALMAGS) 2024 is open for nominations.

This award is an initiative of Population First, a Mumbai-based organization that has been working to promote gender sensitivity in international media for the past 20 years.

The award recognizes the role of the media in shaping public perceptions of gender equality and building a just society. This is the fourth time the award has been presented. For the first two years, the award was given to Indian journalists. Last year, however, the award included media from India as well as South Asian countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives.

Last year, Aishath Nuzuha, a journalist from Mihaaru newspaper and Aminath Khalisa from the Press won the award from Maldives.

The winners of the South Asian category were selected by a jury panel of South Asian Women in Media (SWAM). Dhaka will be represented on the team by Shimla Ahmed, CEO of AO News.

In recent years, the award has received support from UNFPA while the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations and South Asian Women in Media are among the partners of the award this year as well.

“The awards aim to honor and recognize 15 outstanding journalists in India and 11 outstanding South Asian journalists from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh and Maldives. The awards also aim to recognize the significant contribution of content creators in literature, advertising, films as well as OTT platforms”, said Population First C.E.O. A. L. Sharada said.

Last year’s awardees include Network of Women in Media, India (NWMI) – the forum for women in the media profession to share information and resources, exchange ideas, promote media awareness and ethics, and work for gender equality and justice; Women in Cinema Collective who are fighting for a more equitable and considerate workspace for female artists, the mini series Sweet Kaaram Coffee and the feature film Sirf Ek Band Kaafi Hai.
