MDP supports the government’s legislative agenda to amend the Constitution, preventing an increase in the number of members of Parliament.

The Parliamentary Group of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has expressed support for the government’s policy to halt the increase in the number of members of Parliament. This support was announced during a press conference held at the Parliament House.

This initiative aligns with President Mohammed Muizzu’s presidential promise. Consequently, the necessary amendments to the Constitution have been included in the government’s legislative agenda, which consists of 213 bills across 15 topics.

Speaking at the press conference, MDP Prosecutor’s Group Spokesperson and Kendu Constituency Member Ma’roof Zakir emphasized the importance of the government’s legislative agenda, noting that it includes numerous bills and law amendments. He mentioned that the MDP’s prosecutor’s group is currently conducting research to understand the rationale behind these proposed amendments and new laws.

According to the Constitution, each administrative constituency is entitled to one member for the first 5,000 registered population or for each administrative constituency with less than 5,000 registered population. An additional member is allocated for every subsequent 5,000 persons. The 19th Parliament had 87 members, while the 20th Parliament has 93 members.

Ma’roof expressed his personal support for the government’s legislative agenda to amend the Constitution to maintain the current number of members of Parliament. However, he noted that the MDP has not yet officially decided whether to support this amendment.
