A mental health helpline has been launched by the government. 

Abdulla Rafiu, the Minister of Sports and Health, introduced the help line during a ceremony at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This help line can be reached at 1677.

In response to inquiries about the helpline, the Health Ministry stated that its goal is to connect with individuals of all ages who are experiencing mental illness or other difficulties at any time of day. The helpline will operate around the clock. Apart from offering initial mental health support, the number will aid in problem-solving, provide information, and facilitate referrals to relevant agencies in compliance with the policy, they stated.

Haleel, the Minister of Health, also spoke at the event. According to Minister Halil, this helpline will provide assistance to all citizens of the nation. According to the minister, the goal is to build trust with individuals who are experiencing mental health problems and make the phone line their closest friend.

Additionally, Minister Haleel stated that youngsters were among those afflicted with mental illness, which would have an impact on the nation’s productivity. The Minister encouraged everyone experiencing mental health problems, including young adolescents, to reach out to this help line.

Speaking at the event, Minister Rafiu stated that providing mental health patients with emergency assistance will give them hope for a full recovery and that mental health issues should receive the same care as physical ones. Additionally, Minister Rafiu expressed optimism that the helpline would contribute to reducing the need for mental health treatment.

The minister stated that numerous hotlines devoted to distinct cases have already been established.

According to a 2022 step survey, one in five individuals in the nation suffers from symptoms of depression. The study found that 20% of persons hold thoughts about suicide and behaviour that poses a risk to life.
