Dr. Nazla Musthafa of the Maldives Technical Advisory Group on Immunization has said that the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine will be given eight weeks after the first dose.
Speaking at last night’s press conference by the Health Emergency Operations Centre (HEOC), Dr. Nazla said that the decision to administer the second dose of the vaccine eight weeks after the first dose is in accordance with the latest research and the standards of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“Maldives Technical Advisory Committee decided on this after checking the latest research and the standards of WHO. That is because it has been noted that the security provided by the vaccine when the second dose is given eight weeks after the first increases compared to four weeks”, said Dr. Nazla.
Speaking at the press conference further, Dr. Nazla said that every decision made by the Maldives will be based upon the most recent researches and will be in line with the standards of WHO. She also encouraged everyone who have received the first dose of the vaccine to keep the vaccine card safely until the second dose is administered.
So far, 56,218 people have received the Covishield vaccine in the Maldives. Vaccinations against Covid-19 commenced in the Maldives on 1st February 2021. Yesterday alone, over 6,000 vaccinations were recorded across the Maldives.
