In May, the Maldives Zakat House reported that it had assisted 180 individuals in obtaining medical treatment through the Zakat Fund. The majority of the beneficiaries were cancer patients, reflecting the fund’s critical role in supporting those with severe health conditions.
The Zakat House released detailed statistics on the medical aid provided to the poor and needy. The data highlighted four main areas where the Zakat Fund made significant contributions: cancer treatment, heart surgery, kidney disease, and brain operations. Additionally, the fund supported other medical needs.
The breakdown of donations made by the Zakat Fund in May is as follows:
In total, MVR 1.2 million was spent as medical aid in May, with a cumulative expenditure of RF 1.6 crore for assistance during the month. The expenses for May also included aid scheduled for April but delayed due to administrative and account issues.
Beyond medical assistance, the Zakat House’s report included details on other expenses. This included funds allocated for Fitr Zakat and the salaries of administrative staff responsible for managing Zakat-related activities. In May, Rs 2.6 crore was spent on the salaries of these employees. Additionally, RF 41,937 was distributed as Fitr zakat.
The Maldives Zakat House, established by the President in January of this year, has taken over the responsibility of collecting and distributing Zakat from the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. This shift aims to streamline the process and ensure that aid reaches those in need more efficiently.
The Zakat House emphasized that the funds released in May addressed the needs of individuals who could not be assisted in the previous month due to logistical issues. This highlights the organization’s commitment to providing timely and necessary aid to the most vulnerable segments of the population.
