Addu City Meedhoo Magistrate Court has sentenced a man to two months in jail for threaning to kill his mother.
The man convicted in this case is Afsan Latheef, Bashimaage, S. Meedhoo.
Afsan was charged with making death threats to his mother on the night of October 27, 2022 at his residence.
Afsan denied the charges but admitted to the incident in his opening statement. He said he was drunk that day and did not know exactly what he said. The prosecution has taken the testimony of three people including his mother as witnesses in the case. Afsan did not present any defense evidence.
However, he has asked for a commutation of the sentence. However, the judge who heard the case spoke about the virtue of being kind to parents.
The Court determined that the charge of threatening to cause harm against Afsan was proved to the trial beyond reasonable doubt, and therefore, sentenced him to two months and three days in jail.
