According to Environment Minister Aminath Shauna, the new Male’ Waste Transfer Station being built at the Industrial Village by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) will revolutionise the disposal of waste in Male’ City.
Following a Wednesday project site visit, Shauna made the statement in a press conference. Shauna stated that the waste brought to the facility will be assessed based on weight, divided and transported to Thilafushi in containers.
“The waste will be transported for disposal after segregation. For various kinds of waste, there are particular containers,” she noted.
Shauna predicted that the new station’s inclusion of contemporary facilities would completely alter the way waste is managed in Male’ City.
“We anticipate being able to provide the resources WAMCO requires and transform waste management in the greater Male’ area, particularly in Male’ City, with this building and the amenities I mentioned,” she explained.
The Greater Male Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project is comprised of the New Male Waste Transfer Station and is designed for Zone 3 and the Greater Male Area.
The station has a weighbridge, administrative building, and waste tipping decks that were specifically designed for waste disposal. Before the waste is transported to Thilafushi, these structures document waste statistics.
The station has a 65,000 square foot floor area, making it large enough to hold different-sized dump vehicles as well as small and medium-sized pickups.
The station will have a roof deck on the top floor where WAMCO vehicles can be parked, and the ground floor will house waste management employees, a garage for vehicle repair, and an administrative area.
A nearby office block is also being constructed by WAMCO. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lab, the administrative center for WAMCO, and the department responsible for waste management and pollution control will all be located in the six-story structure.
China State Construction and Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) was given the contract for the MVR 184 million (USD 11.97 million) project, and it has 14 months to complete it. The building process started in February 2022 and is anticipated to be completed in July.
