Malé, Maldives – AO News is celebrating its 15th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its journey as a trusted media platform and a champion of youth development in journalism.

Originally launched in 2011 as Addu Online, the platform began by serving audiences in Addu City before expanding its reach across the southern region under the name AO News. The organisation also holds a pioneering place in the country’s media landscape as the first online media platform in the Maldives to be led by a woman.

“It’s not just about reporting news—it’s about empowering voices and creating opportunities.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, AO News played a vital role in community engagement by training young individuals as television presenters and launching reporting across four southern atolls using local dialects. This initiative helped ensure continued access to information while amplifying regional voices.

Over the past 15 years, the organisation has trained more than 500 youth in journalism, many of whom have gone on to build successful careers in leading media outlets and related fields.

“Seeing our trainees grow into professionals is one of our greatest achievements.”

AO News has also contributed to media development at the grassroots level by supporting schools in establishing media clubs, providing students with platforms to learn and express themselves.

The organisation’s impact has extended beyond national borders, with two of its journalists receiving international awards. In addition, its CEO and Founder has been recognised with multiple national and international accolades for contributions to journalism.

“This journey would not have been possible without the support of our community, partners, and team.”

As AO News reflects on its achievements, it continues to look ahead with a strong commitment to strengthening independent journalism, empowering young voices, and expanding its reach across the Maldives.
