The Judiciary Committee of the People’s Majlis on Thursday approved the decision of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to dismiss Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi and Justice Adam Mohamed from the Supreme Court.
All the members of the judiciary committee present for yesterday’s meeting unanimously voted for the dismissal of the two judges. The committee reviewed whether JSC’s decision to impeach the two judges was made in accordance with the rules and regulations.
Subsequently, the case will again be presented to the parliament floor. According to the law, a judge can only be removed from his office if the parliament votes against the individual in question.
The impeachment notion of both the judges was submitted to the parliament by JSC last Wednesday.
JSC has also suspended the two judges for 60 days upon investigation into cases where the Supreme Court delivered unlawful rulings, to preserve the integrity of the judiciary.
In a statement released on Wednesday, JSC stated that the decision to impeach the two judges was made after investigating their disciplinary issues, and claimed that the judges have committed acts which do not meet with the standards of discipline expected of them. Therefore, JSC is seeking the removal of both the judges from their respective positions through the parliament.
