A high-risk patient being treated at GA. Villingili Covid facility has passed away today morning. The deceased is a 77 year old Maldivian male.

This is the 56th Covid-related death in the Maldives.

While this is the first time a Covid patient seeking treatment outside of Male’ has died in the Maldives, this is also the the 8th fatality of the disease this year.

According to our sources, the deceased is from GA. Dhevvadhoo and is linked to the Dhevvadhoo cluster.

Villingili Hospital says that the deceased was a positive case brought from Dhevvadhoo to Vilingili on 13th January 2021. The hospital also says that the 77 year old man was bedridden for a long time due to a stroke.

Maldives has seen a rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the past couple of weeks. Yesterday alone, 126 tested positive for the disease across the country and the number of hospitalized patients stands at 204.

So far, Maldives has recorded 16,909 positive cases and 14,772 recoveries.
