Vilufushi to Undergo Major Development: Airport, Hospital, and Infrastructure Upgrades Announced President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled ambitious development plans for Vilufushi, promising significant improvements to the island’s infrastructure and services. The announcements were made during his visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour. Key projects include the construction of a new airport and hospital. The airport, featuring an 1,800-meter runway, is slated for completion within 30 months, with land reclamation starting tomorrow. The new hospital is expected to be operational within 18 months, promising state-of-the-art healthcare for residents. Addressing immediate needs, the President confirmed that water, electricity, and sewerage systems will be installed in all completed housing units by the end of the year. He also announced plans for an additional 100 housing units next year, with the option for construction on individual residents’ plots. The government is also prepared to offer financial compensation to those affected by the 2004 tsunami to resolve long-standing housing issues. Enhancements to financial services are also on the horizon, with a Bank of Maldives ATM service launching tomorrow, followed by a new branch opening by March of next year. Looking ahead, the President outlined projects planned for next year’s budget, including a Maldives National University (MNU) campus, harbor expansion, and the upgrade of the local mosque into an Islamic Centre. Road development, including a ring road, is also confirmed. Sports facilities, such as a football stadium, futsal court, and handball court, will begin construction this year, with fish aggregation devices for sports fishing to be installed within three months. To support ongoing and future development, the government will establish a Public Works Unit on the island. Passport issuance services were also officially launched during the event, marking another step forward in improving services for Vilufushi residents.
