A request for the ratification of the amendment bill put out by the MDP to permit voting for the parliamentary elections to take place after the holy month of Ramadan has been made in the form of an emergency motion to the Parliament today.

The Democratic MP from the Ungoofaaru seat, Mohamed Waheed (Wadde), brought up the matter in the parliament today.

In support of the emergency motion, Wadde stated that there had been no indication whatsoever more than a week after the bill amending the General Law on Elections was forwarded to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for confirmation by the Parliament.

The bill, which mandates that elections take place 10 days following the fasting month, was approved by all major parties, according to the emergency case.

The administration wasted time delaying the bill so that elections could be held on the 17th of the following month, as the government desired, rather than returning the bill to parliament with approval.

The parliament has approved the MDP’s emergency resolution asking for confirmation of the amending bill. Of the 24 members present, 23 voted in favour of passing the bill.
