Dr. Abdulla Maumoon has joined President Solih after serving in Qasim Ibrahim’s villa business and later becoming a minister under the JP slot.
After being given the chance to run in the 2018 presidential election, political leaders Qasim, President Mohamed Nasheed, and President Maumoon banded together to form an alliance and award the presidential ticket to President Solih.
Following the coalition’s election victory, government positions were distributed to various parties, with Qasim’s Jumhooree Party receiving the tourism ministry’s slot and presenting Dr. Mausoom’s name for the position. At the time, Mausoom was the general manager of Qasim’s villa company.
Only Qasim chose to run for president when the Jumhooree Party decided to run for president and opened the door for the party’s presidential ticket. As a result, Qasim will be the party’s presidency nominee.
Soon after Qasim declared his candidacy, some of the party’s top officials in the government and state-owned enterprises announced their support for President Solih and left the party.
Mausoom was the first cabinet minister to declare his support for President Solih, who was a minister in JP slot at the time. “I believe that President Ibrahim’s second term is in the best interests of citizens of the Maldives, and the state as a whole,” he said in a tweet.
Maumoon also announced that he would pledge allegiance to President Ibrahim without any conditions. Qasim’s wife, Transport Minister Aishath Nahula, and Fisheries Minister Dr Hussain Rasheed Ahmed, both JP ministers in the current government, have yet to make an obvious decision.
