Justice Ali Rasheed, who was appointed to Supreme Court after he sentenced President Yameen to five years in prison, has fired his official driver.
Each judge is assigned a driver and a car by the Supreme Court. Judge Ali Rasheed recently fired his car driver, citing his lack of reliability. It is reported that Ali Rashid is now driving the car on his own.
While the driver has been fired, Ali Rasheed’s personal security officer has also been barred from riding in the car, citing a lack of trust. The security officer will now have to follow Ali Rasheed’s car on a motorcycle. Security personnel are usually present in the car with the judges.
According to sources, Ali Rashid is now attempting to appoint one of his brothers-in-law as the driver.
President Yameen was sentenced to five years in prison by Ali Rasheed in November 2019, after which he was appointed to the Supreme Court. Many Maldivians have expressed their displeasure with him. During the party’s administration, the opposition party has pledged to take up Rasheed’s case and put him behind bars.
