Poland defeated Saudi Arabia 0-2 on Saturday, with Robert Lewandowski scoring his first goal in World Cup history.
Poland and Mexico drew 0-0 in their Group C match while Argentina was defeated 2-1 by Saudi Arabia.
Poland climbed to the top of the group with four points after the victory. Saudi Arabia is in second place with three points and Mexico has one point, while Argentina has none. Argentina will take on Mexico later tonight in this group.
Saudi Arabia got off to a good start in the encounter. Wojciech Szczsny of Poland expertly parried away Mohamed Kanno’s first-ever goal for the team. In the first half, Saleh al-Shehri saved a shot from the edge of the area by Krystian Bielik of Poland.
Piotr Zieliski gave Poland the lead in the 39th minute with Lewandowski assisting on the fantastic shot. Unfortunatley, Saudi Arabia wasted a penalty corner in the first half. Salem Al-Dawsari’s shot was saved by keeper Szczsny, who also saved a shot by Al-Breik for the second time in a row.
Salem Al-Dawsari started the second half strongly, but he was defeated once more by Szczsny. Saudi’s attempt flew over the goal post a few minutes later.
Poland launched more counter-attacks in the second half. Arkadiusz Milik’s head shot was blocked by the stumps. A few minutes later, Lewandowski’s attempt was also deflected into Saudi’s keeper’s hands.
Lewandowski scored Poland’s second goal in the 82nd minute. When the Saudi defender released the ball, Lewandowski was able to clear it with ease. The entire team was overjoyed when Lewandowski scored his first goal of this World Cup. Lewandowski has appeared in five World Cup matches for Poland so, and it is the 77th goal for the national team.
Despite Lewandowski’s goal, Poland missed further scoring opportunities. The players, on the other hand, were more than glad to finish with the lead.
In their final group encounter, Poland will face Argentina. A draw would allow Poland to advance to the second round.
The World Cup match between France and Denmark is slated for tonight.
