Ministry of Environment and United Nations environment (UNEP) D.T.U. has agreed upon conducting a survey for making a waste audit in Addu city under the ongoing project, Initiative for climate change (ICAT).
This survey is to be conducted by the Geotech Maldives in collaboration with the Addu chapter of the Southern Community Empowerment Association of Maldives (SCHEME)
Starting from February third, the survey will be commenced till the 7th of February. In this time period, they will be working on monitoring the waste being discarded from a selected amounted of local households, Health care facilities, shops, and cafe’s. Some chosen restaurants will be used to monitor the type’s waste being disposed. Within the given time period, the amount of waste produced will be categorized and weighed category wise. On the 7th of February, the waste thrown from each households will be recalculated to make an estimation of how much waste is created each week. After one week of monitoring, the team will be monitoring the amounts of waste other than discarded food waste such as plastics and cans.

The managing director of GeoTech Maldives Dr. Mahmoodh Riyaz has stated while talking with our team, that this survey is being conducted to find out the waste being generated in Maldives and to check the greenhouse gas emitted by using the I.P.P.C. regulations.
The data collected in this survey will be used in the report which is reported to the UNFCCC.
The survey is to be conducted in 10 parts of the Maldives, and these parts will be chosen within the 7 zones that manages waste.
