MIFCO is working to bring the Addu Fisheries Complex back into operation amid ongoing protests and property damage by fishermen.

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) is working to bring the Addu Fisheries Complex back into operation following disruptions caused by ongoing protests. According to a statement from MIFCO, some individuals have damaged the company’s property at the complex since Thursday, affecting the basic needs of the employees and halting operations.

MIFCO has stated that while they accept protests within the legal framework, the protesters have entered restricted areas without permission. These areas include the cold storage area, powerhouse building, and employee residential areas. The protesters’ actions, such as damaging the employees’ canteen and cutting electricity in the accommodation area, have disrupted essential activities like eating, sleeping, and toileting for the employees.

MIFCO has paid RF 234 million to fishermen by the end of last year and RF 766 million to fishing boats so far this year. However, there is an outstanding payment of RF 52.6 million for one month and 14 days. MIFCO explained that they are currently purchasing fish at a loss of RF 8 per kg and rely on the government for financial support to pay for the weighed fish. The company regrets the delay in payment and is working with the government to secure additional funds.

Due to the ongoing protests, MIFCO is experiencing financial losses and is collaborating with relevant authorities to resolve the issue and resume operations at the Addu Fisheries Complex. Additionally, MIFCO announced that it will suspend the purchase of fish from boats that interfere with police responsibilities for three months.
