Maldives Sports corporation, formed under the law of sports has been abolished under the government’s cost reduction work during this pandemic.

Minister of Youth and Sports Ahmed Mahloof explained at a committee meeting which was held yesterday that the corporation is operating under government expenses and the corporation is not getting the expected returns for it. He further stated the only projects the corporation receive are from the ministry. Additionally, the corporation’s head office located at Galolhu stadium north side is also provided by the ministry which it incurs heavy costs.

On a different occasion minister Mahloof talked about the importance of working together with the sports corporation and the sports ministry in order to take the sports in Maldives to a new level. He further stated to achieve that the outdoor gym project (by India) was given to the sports corporation. The project includes building outdoor gyms in 61 islands and is currently the only project the company is undertaking.

Sports corporation was formed on March 15 2015 on the hopes of building and upgrading a better infrastructure for the sports. Furthermore, the corporation also aimed at developing a sports channel which will have the programs to increase the potential of the athletes and to conduct more training programs.
