President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has stated that special efforts are being made for the infrastructure development of the council offices using the investor finance. The President made the remarks in his address on the occasion of Decentralisation Day.
The President remarked that there has been a lack of focus on improving council infrastructure for the past 13 years. The government’s goal is to create an environment where councils can carry out their legal duties, communicate with the public, and collaborate effectively.
In his address, the President mentioned that creating a separate ministry to strengthen decentralisation is showing visible results. He also mentioned that the pace of implementation is accelerating as the work with the government and councils increases on the issues.
The President also expressed that the policy established and enacted to ‘bring uninhabited islands under council jurisdiction, enable residents to gain profit signifies a beneficial shift in the decentralisation system.
On February 26, 2011, the Maldives’ formal legislative framework allowed for the decentralization of government.
