President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced the establishment of a development zone encompassing the four northernmost atolls. He made the announcement while addressing the residents of Hdh. Hanimaadhoo Island.
In his remarks, the President highlighted the importance of enhancing regional development to achieve sustainable development. He deliberated plans to establish eight development zones in the four northernmost and southernmost atolls. Additionally, seven central regions in the central Maldives are slated for transformation into urban centres.
President Dr Muizzu relayed that the Administration’s development policy would prioritise individual islands, even in the northernmost development zone, due to immigration. He emphasised that Hanimaadhoo Island is among the prioritised islands for population consolidation and development policies, as it falls within the four northernmost atoll development zones.
Referring to the ongoing airport development work, the President stated that the airport needs to be developed more comprehensively. He disclosed his intention to renegotiate with the loan provider to accommodate the runway extension by 700 metres.
The President added that the Administration is committed to constructing a state-of-the-art hospital on Hanimaadhoo Island. This initiative is a critical component of the Administration’s broader regional development strategy.
