The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed four additional cases of the Omicron variant in the Maldives. The variant was first confirmed case of the Omicron variant was found in early December by a South African Tourist who arrived in the Maldives on 21 November.

These additional cases were confirmed during a press conference held by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Wednesday. During the press conference, Dr Ibrahim Afzal stated that the Maldives has detected four more additional cases of the new variant. Dr Afzal further noted that the health authorities have been discussing putting on additional measures and have been conducting risk assessments.

The Omicron variant has been regarded as more transmissible compared to other variants, and the effectiveness of vaccines against the new variant is low.
