Maldives Immigration clarifies that not all foreigners found in the ongoing raids will be deported. Those who qualify will have the chance to work legally in the Maldives.

This statement came during a media briefing about the national operation, which began on September 20th. The operation, led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, aims to find undocumented foreign nationals and shut down illegal businesses. It’s a joint effort by Maldives Immigration and the Maldives Police Service.

Chief Immigration Officer Ahmed Mujuthaba explained that the main goal is to address undocumented workers and illegal activities, including those who help them.

During the raids, those without valid visas are identified. However, those whose visas expired less than six months ago are issued notices instead of being detained, while those without legal status are given the option to register under the government’s regularisation programme.

Mujuthaba emphasized that the government provides opportunities for Maldivian employers to hire foreign workers legally. He urged employers to follow the rules.

So far, 463 locations have been searched, and 932 foreigners have been checked. 81 undocumented foreigners have been detained, and information on 10 locations with illegal businesses run by foreigners has been shared with authorities.
