In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, STELCO has launched an ambitious programme to plant 5 million trees as part of the President’s 5 million tree planting initiative, inaugurated on International Environment Day.

STELCO’s project commenced in K. Thulusdhoo, where the company began planting the first batch of 500,000 saplings. The event saw active participation from STELCO’s owners and employees, along with students from Thulusdhoo School and members of the Island Council, highlighting the community’s commitment to the initiative.

Over the next five years, STELCO aims to plant a total of 500,000 saplings, with a target of 25,000 saplings to be planted this year alone. The trees will be planted across 33 islands serviced by STELCO, ensuring widespread environmental benefits.

To ensure the success and sustainability of the programme, STELCO will designate an employee in each island as a ‘green agent’ responsible for the care and maintenance of the planted saplings. This effort will be carried out in collaboration with local councils, ensuring community involvement and support.

The 5 million trees programme is a key promise of the President, aimed at significantly enhancing the country’s green cover. The initiative includes various components that will be implemented over the next five years, with a special emphasis on tree plantation. Additionally, the government has committed to ongoing efforts to make the Maldives carbon neutral, protect wetlands and creeks, and improve waste management practices.

STELCO’s tree planting programme is a crucial part of this broader environmental strategy, reflecting the company’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
