Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that the first batch of free pilgrims will be sent for Hajj next year.

“President Dr. Muizzu has promised to send 1,000 people for Hajj within five years with the assistance of the state”, Shaheem said in a post he made on social media platform, X (former Twitter).

Shaheem also said the number of pilgrims to be sent will be announced once the official quota is settled, and that the guideline for selecting pilgrims will also be announced soon.

During the presidential election, President Mohammed Muizzu said that if he won the presidential election, he would strengthen the Maldives Hajj Corporation and reduce the cost of Hajj, as well as send 1,000 poor people for free pilgrimage within five years. Further, President Muizzu said that while the underprivileged will be taken for free Hajj, those with low affordability will be able to pay the price of Hajj in instalments.
