The government has decided to increase the disability allowance up to MVR 6,000. This was announced at the press conference held on Thursday by Aishath Mohamed Didi, Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services; Miuvaan Mohamed, Spokesperson at the President’s Office; Mariyam Shafeeg, Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA); and Ismail Azzam Wajeeh, Managing Director of Aasandha Company Pvt. Ltd.
Currently, people with disabilities receive a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000. However, as announced in the press conference, the monthly disability allowance has now been increased to MVR 3,000.
In addition to this, three additional benefits have been introduced to further assist PWDs. These include a MVR 2,000 carer allowance for those who care for PWDs unable to live independently, selfcare allowance of MVR 1,000 for PWDs who require additional resources to meet basic needs and an additional allowance ofr MVR 1,000 for households with more than three PWDs.
With these changes, all persons with disabilities will receive a monthly allowance between MVR 3,000 to MVR 6,000.
