According to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, it is vital for associations in each island to take action regarding social problems.

The President was addressing at a ceremony held this evening at the Social Centre Indoor Hall to award the Maldives’ first-ever Civil Society Awards. First Lady Fazna Ahmed and Vice President Faisal Naseem were also in attendance.

Speaking at the event, he noted that at this time, addressing social concerns in society is a crucial work that must be accomplished. He asserted that only after addressing social difficulties within the society could the government’s accomplishments  in other sectors truly bring about satisfaction.

He emphasised the necessity to act in a decentralized manner, taking into account the circumstances in each island, because there are various levels and types of socioeconomic problems in various sections of the nation. He added that organizations’ initiative and cooperation are crucial in the attempts to address these concerns.

He noted that in addition to social issues, maintaining the environment and combating climate change should also be top priorities.

He stated, “It is crucial that these are elements of the aims of civil society. Social issues and environmental conservation are two areas that demand the leadership and participation of NGOs in particular.”
In order to eliminate the usage of single-use plastic, he also emphasized the necessity of starting unique programs with the involvement of all stakeholders.

At the event conducted this evening, the President presented the prizes to the Civil Society Award winners. The Vice President utilized the occasion to introduce the “Mees Portal.” Additionally, the First Lady presented grants to recipients of NGO funds.

The recently established Civil Society Awards in the Maldives aims to encourage and recognise organisations that deliver exceptional services among charitable organisations as well as to increase awareness of the role self-initiated civil society plays in empowering the country’s society.
