To prevent oral and throat cancer, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised people to avoid eating supari/Areca nut.

According to a survey, four out of every five Maldivians consume Areca nut. According to an HPA survey, more than half of respondents used Areca nut/supari on a daily basis. It accounts for 56.2 percent of the total population of the country.

Having trouble swallowing, coughing up blood, losing weight quickly, among  others are early signs of oral and throat cancer. These two cancers can be brought on by chewing tobacco, cigarettes, and the stuffing used in beetle wraps, which occasionally uses coconut shavings and is used by 56.2% of the country’s population.

The HPA and other health organisations advise people to try natural mouth fresheners like clove, cardamom, and cinnamon in order to prevent throat and oral cancer, which can be both painful and dangerous.
