Earlier tonight, the Netherlands and Senegal qualified for the second round of the FIFA World Cup in Group A.
The Netherlands advanced to the next round after defeating tournament host Qatar 2-0, while Senegal defeated Ecuador 2-1 tonight.
With seven points, the Netherlands topped the group. Senegal is in second place with six points with Ecuador being third with four points, while Qatar is last with none.
Qatar is competing in its first World Cup. This time, the team was given the opportunity as the World Cup host country. They lost all three tournament games and only scored one goal. Overall, Qatar performed poorly.
The Netherlands performed admirably in the match, launching numerous attacks. If the Netherlands had tied the lead with Senegal, Ecuador would have advanced to the next round. Senegal, on the other hand, kept playing and eventually took the lead. Ismaela Sarr scored Senegal’s first goal with a penalty corner.
Senegal was leading when Ecuador’s Moisés Caicedo equalized in the 68th minute of the second half. But Ecuador couldn’t keep this lead for more than two minutes, as Senegal’s second goal came in the 70th minute from Kalidou Koulibaly. The ball was an accidental pass by an Ecuadorian player, which Koulibaly calmly slid it into the net.
In the second round, the Netherlands will face the second team from Group B, which includes England. Senegal will face the group’s top team.
The World Cup matches will begin at 12:00 midnight. Iran and the United States will both play at that time, along with England and Wales.
