The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has raised concerns over recent political rallies, warning that some activities are violating social norms and promoting hatred and unrest.

In a statement, the commission highlighted a series of night-time rallies held in the capital, cautioning that the rhetoric used in such gatherings could contribute to instability. While noting that Constitution of the Maldives guarantees freedom of expression, HRCM emphasised that this right must be exercised within legal and societal boundaries.

The commission stated that both political gatherings and social media activities should not incite violence or disrupt public order.

HRCM urged the public to act responsibly and avoid speech that promotes violence, hatred, or harm to society. It also called on political party leaders to refrain from engaging in or encouraging harmful rhetoric and actions.

Additionally, the commission appealed to relevant state institutions to take firm action within the legal framework to prevent such incidents. Security forces were also urged to ensure support for lawful political activities, while political parties were encouraged to conduct their activities peacefully, respect differing views, and operate within the bounds of the law.
