The Elections Commission (EC) has released the rules for electing members to the new Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC), established under the new media law. Each registered media outlet can cast one vote.
However, there are concerns about the law. Article 39 allows broad interpretations, potentially enabling the commission to misuse provisions, such as those related to national security. Similarly, the code of conduct, which covers respecting individual freedoms and avoiding false information, is also seen as open to broad interpretation, raising fears of misuse by the commission.
Those wishing to apply for the MMBC have 10 days to do so. Candidates will be notified of their eligibility within two days. The election must be held at least two days after the announcement of eligible candidates.
Broadcast media can vote for members representing their sector, but not for other elected members.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu established the MMBC after the media bill was passed on September 18, despite protests from journalists and organizations.
