A parliamentary committee has approved the appointment of three ministers in President Mohamed Muizzu’s cabinet who had previously not received parliamentary approval. This decision was made by the Government’s Responsibility Committee, which reviewed the appointments following a protracted approval process.
In January this year, President Muizzu initially submitted a list of 22 ministers for approval by the House of Representatives. While 19 of these ministers were approved, three did not receive the necessary nod from the 19th Parliament, which held a majority. The ministers in question were Minister for Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, Minister for Housing, Land and Infrastructure Development Ali Haider, and Attorney General Ahmed Usham.
Following this decision, President Muizzu reappointed the three ministers and resubmitted their names to the parliament for approval. However, the then-Speaker, Mohamed Aslam, postponed the matter due to a resolution moved by former Galolhu North MP Eva Abdulla. Consequently, the issue remained unresolved at the end of the 19th Session.
With the 20th Parliament taking oath last week, the matter was referred to the Government’s Responsibility Committee for further review. After examining the issue, the committee approved the appointments of the three ministers and decided to forward the matter to the full House for final approval.
The proposal to approve the ministers passed with the support of seven out of the nine committee members. One member voted against the proposal, and one abstained.
This decision marks a significant step in finalizing the composition of President Muizzu’s cabinet, ensuring that all ministers have the necessary parliamentary approval to effectively carry out their duties. The matter will now be presented to the House for a final vote.
