United States has provided USD 2 million in economic support funding to Maldives.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated the grant aid would assist the expansion of social protection services by civil society organisation and support the COVID-19 recovery policies of the Government. The ministry further stated technical support to the Government, private sector, and financial institutions to support businesses affected by the pandemic will benefit from the grant aid.

Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid thanked US Secretary of State Micheal R Pompeo and US Government for the timely assistance to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic.

Moreover, the Government of Japan also provided Maldives with an emergency grant of total USD 541,400. The emergency grant provided by the Government of Japan to Maldives includes USD 356,400 for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and USD 185,000 to assist the Government of Maldives in its effort to response to COVID-19.
