Ministry of Tourism has announced actions will be taken against resorts violating the laws and regulations enforced by the administration.

A notice published by the foreign ministry stated the ministry received several complaints regarding resorts violating the law and regulation due to the economic crisis during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Complains stated in the notice include, cases of dismissal, wage alterations and no pay leave imposed on employees by several employers against the Employment Act. Instructing all tourist facilities to abide by the law the ministry stated actions will be taken against resorts and tourist facilities violating the laws and regulations.

Additionally, the noticed published by the ministry stated there are several complaints of expatriates being sent to Velana International Airport (VIA) before confirmation of their flight details. The ministry instructed all resort employers not to send any tourist or expat to the airport before the confirmation of flight details.

The Maldivian administration has been taking stringent measures in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the nation. Among the measures include the suspension of issuing on arrival visa to all foreign nationals bringing a halt to all resort operations across the nation. All resorts are expected to be shut down within the next two weeks.
