President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said the Government is embarking upon the New Year 2021 with renewed hope and firm resolve to revive the economy and revitalise the nation. He made the statement in his message to the Maldivian people on the occasion of the New Year. In his message, the President extended warm greetings and earnest felicitations to all Maldivians and wished them a year blessed with joy and good fortune.

Looking back at the year 2020, President Solih reminisced how the Covid-19 pandemic led to a national lockdown and socioeconomic impacts. He noted that the hardships experienced in 2020 had revealed acutely vulnerable sectors in the country and has contributed to a new roadmap to nurture the nation’s future best.

In his message, President Solih explained some of the prominent projects in the pipeline for the year ahead, highlighting the decentralisation of essential services as a significant objective for the year.

Speaking on the economic trials caused by the pandemic, the President revealed that his Administration would strive to alleviate the dependency on tourism, and spotlighted on the fisheries and agriculture industries as prospects for further development. He then reiterated that the Administration is deeply committed to protecting our environment and safeguarding society’s vulnerable members as we work towards national progress.

President Solih further stated that ensuring all Maldivians can live happy and dignified lives will continue to be a core value of his Administration and called on the public to participate in this endeavour by advocating compassion and solidarity. He also implored the people to work together in harmony towards the collective prosperity of the nation.

The President concluded his address with a prayer to Almighty Allah to grant us victory in our bid to revive the economy and return to normalcy and bless our efforts to achieve our objectives of decentralised development. He also prayed the almighty grace our nation and us with good fortune, felicity and affluence.
